Our Outreach Activities

On a regular basis we respond to media inquiries, organize talks like the so called “IT-Themenabend” and publish German and English press releases on the following news portals: idw scientific information service, AlphaGalileo and EurekAlert.

As creating public awareness is an important task, the MMCI cluster participates in numerous events and initiates several activities. Event participation includes not only regular appearances at major science fairs such as CeBIT, but also active participation in local events such as the IT Day Saarland. Special campus events such as the annual Girls’ Day, or regular robotics workshops with high school students, are geared towards prospective students. Our outreach activities (including a variety of presentations at high schools and public venues) are too numerous to list them all.

To stimulate interest in computer science, we also organize the Informatics Journalism Award, which is unique in Germany. Funded by the state of Saarland (prize money €15,000), the prize has gained substantial standing and visibility and is presented in person by the minister-president.

To attract young talent to Saarbrücken, we not only administer the Facebook page “Saarland University Computer Science”, but also co-organize the Federal High School Student Competition in Informatics (Bundeswettbewerb Informatik). For all finalists, we arrange a two-day training camp at Saarland Informatics Campus.

To advise government and industry, our principal investigators are on high-level advisory boards for government and industry, e.g., the Wissenschaftsrat, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and the ERC Scientific Council.

One of our success stories:
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) presented an award to one of the MMCI’s research group leaders for shutting down one of the largest botnets worldwide (GameOver Zeus) in 2014. Our press release dealing with the award and the background story resulted not only in an award-winning, four-page-long profile published by the German newspaper WELT AM SONNTAG, but also in our award-winning short film featuring Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak as a guest actor.
