Prof. Dr. Joachim Weickert

Joachim Weickert is Full Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Saarland University where he heads the Mathematical Image Analysis Group. He performs research in image processing, computer vision and scientific computing, focusing on techniques based on partial differential equations and variational methods. He has developed models and efficient algorithms for image restoration, enhancement, segmentation, compression, motion computation, stereo reconstruction, and shape from shading, as well as processing methods for tensor fields.

His scientific work covers more than 300 refereed publications and 9 books. Joachim Weickert has received 30 research, teaching and reviewing awards, including the 2010 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award. It constitutes the most prestigious German science award, amounting to 2.5 million Euro in research funds. In 2017 he has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant. Dr. Weickert has served on the editorial boards of ten international journals and book series.

He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision (Springer). He has been reviewer for more than 70 journals and 20 funding organizations. He has given over 170 invited talks at conferences, workshops and other universities, and was area chair of six ECCV or ICCV conferences. He has turned down offers for professorships at the Technical University of München, the University of Karlsruhe, the Free University of Berlin, and the Technical University of Kaiserslautern.
