Dr. Jilles Vreeken

Jilles Vreeken is the head of the Independent Research Group on Exploratory Data Analysis within the Cluster of Excellence.

Short CV

His research is mainly concerned with exploratory data mining: how to find interesting local structure in data, as well as how put it to good use. His research interests include statistical and information-theoretic techniques for identifying informative local structure in large collections of complex data, how to efficiently mine good data descriptions directly from such data, the theoretical and practical foundations of interactive frameworks for data exploration, and how to characterize influence propagation in social networks, as well as approaches for meaningfully comparing and validating exploratory results.

He was tutorial chair for SDM 2017, program co-chair for ECML PKDD 2016, publicity cochair or IU 2015, sponsorship co-chair for ECMLPKDD 2014, workshop co-chair for IEEE ICDM 2012, and has co-organised seven workshops and four tutorials. He regularly reviews for DAMI, TKDD, KAIS, TKDE, as well as for KDD, ICDM, SDM, ECML PKDD, and is member of the editoial board of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovey, and is member of the ECML PKDD Journal Track Guest Editorial Board.

He obtained his M.Sc. in Computer Science from Universiteit Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 2009.
He pursued his Ph.D. at the same university under supervision of Arno Siebes, defending his thesis 'Making Pattern Mining Useful' in 2009, and received the 2010 ACM SIGKDD Best Dissertation Runner-Up award. Between 2009 and 2013 he was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Antwerp, supported by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).

Research interests

His research interests include data mining and machine learning, exploratory data analysis and pattern mining. He is particularly interested in developing well-founded theory and efficient methods for extracting informative models and characteristic patterns from large data, and putting these to good use. He has published over 45 conference and journal papers, and has won two best (student) paper awards.

  • 2015 Busy Beaver teaching award for best CS lecture Summer Semester 2015
  • 2014 Invited to the Heidelberg Laureate Forum as a Young Researcher
  • 2013 Post-doctoral Fellowship (renewal), Research Foundation Flanders (FWO)
  • 2011 ACM SIGKDD Best Student Paper Award for “Tell Me What I Need To Know”
  • 2010 Post-doctoral Fellowship, Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) ACM SIGKDD Runner-Up for the Doctoral Dissertation Award
