Prof. Dr. Raimund Seidel

Professor Dr. Raimund Seidel came to Saarland from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1994. He has never regretted making this move from San Francisco to Sankt Ingbert, a supposedly provincial area: "Even then there was nowhere in Europe to match Saarbrücken in my field," he says with conviction.
Professor Seidel, who was born in Austria, and his "Theoretical Computer Science" group research the mathematical foundations for dealing with complex geometric configurations.
As the coordinator of the International Graduate School for Computer Science in Saarbrücken, he also focuses on attracting young academics to the Computer Science hub in Saarbrücken and supporting them in their studies.

Graduate School

Professor Raimund Seidel, Ph.D. is the coordinator of the International Graduate School in Saarbrücken, which offers a course of doctoral studies in Computer Science at the highest level in keeping with international standards. All courses and examinations are in English. Students with a strong interest in research can also start the Ph.D. course directly after obtaining a bachelor‘s degree, without having to attend a master‘s course. Applicants are evaluated in a central admission process. Students receive financial support, and female students can qualify for special funding.
The program at the Graduate School is a joint project of all professors and lecturers of the Computer Science faculty of the university and also of the associated institutes, the MPI of Computer Science, the MPI for Software Systems and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI).

Theoretical Computer Science

Raimund Seidel’s main area of research is the design and analysis of efficient algorithms and data structures, especially for geometric problems. Typical examples are computational problems involving higher dimensional polyhedra, localizing query points amidst a very large number of geometric objects, and approximative geometric query answering. As ancillary subjects, Seidel’s group also studies combinatorial geometry and randomization.
