Prof. Dr. Joachim Weickert

Human communication is based on visual information to a very high degree. For this reason, the "Image Processing and Computer Vision" working group of Professor Joachim Weickert plays a key role in the Cluster of Excellence, as it researches how images are processed and interpreted by a computer.

Although he mainly focuses on researching the mathematical principles, his work has already produced a number of practical applications. These include driver assistance systems in automobiles through to medical diagnosis methods, visual aids for more effective location of oil fields and even an advisory tool for hairdressing salons. Is this the reason why the interdisciplinary master's degree course in "Visual Computing" initiated by Professor Weickert has one of the highest numbers of female students in the Saarbrücken Computer Science faculty?

Master's course "Visual Computing"

Digital images and visual simulations have an ever-increasing importance in numerous application fields, from industrial quality control or driver assistance systems to computer games. The entire field of acquiring, analyzing and synthesizing visual data by means of computers is called visual computing. Saarland University offers a novel interdisciplinary master's degree program that is entirely devoted to all aspects of visual computing. It includes classes and seminars on:

  • Image acquisition and geometric foundations
  • Image analysis (image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition)
  • Image synthesis (computer graphics, scientific visualization, geometric modeling)
  • Related fields such as telecommunications, machine learning, artificial intelligence, signal processing, computational linguistics, medical engineering, cognitive sciences
  • Useful foundations in mathematics, computer science, physics, and mechatronics.

Visual Computing is a research-oriented international program that can be studied entirely in English. Students with a bachelor‘s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, mechatronics or a related field are invited to apply. International applications are very welcome.
A Master of Science in Visual Computing is an internationally recognized degree which offers excellent job prospects in numerous application fields.
